Economic Impact of the Broader Adoption of Virtual Hospitals in Australia

A recent article in The Sydney Morning Herald highlights a KPMG Australia report titled “Economic Impact of the Broader Adoption of Virtual Hospitals in Australia,” which uncovers how Australia could save $7 billion by expanding virtual hospitals and implementing remote patient monitoring.

The report suggests that if Australia commits to this shift, hundreds of thousands of patients could receive safe and effective care at home, alleviating the strain on our healthcare system and freeing up critical hospital beds. By acting now, Australia could save up to $1 billion in healthcare costs and more than $6 billion in capital expenditures by 2030.

Key elements of home hospitals could include mobile X-ray and ultrasound machines, IV antibiotics, blood tests, medication administration, and remote monitoring of vital signs like pulse, temperature, and blood pressure.
